Abstract
This study focuses on the understanding of a territory marked by realities engendered by social exclusion and violation of basic rights and citizenship, a fact that directly affects the living conditions and health of families living in the MacLaren community (Complexo de favelas da Maré Rio de Janeiro).Understanding how the violence in its many forms can compromise dialectically determining spatial social health and how inequalities occur in excluded and subjugated territories of the city (as the favelas), can provide important information to overcome complex health issues in these territories. The main objective of this study is to know the living conditions and health of favela Maclaren. For this, the adopted methodological approach was an exploratory study with a quantitative and qualitative approach, seeking to understand different dimensions of the object of study. It was developed and applied a questionnaire with closed and open questions to the residents of favela Maclaren including issues related to sociodemographic characteristics of the family; socioeconomic status; family structure; family relationships; self-rated health; psychological distress; alcohol and drugs; access to services; violence and social support. The qualitative approach was based on the participant observation to the daily record of the participants in order to supplement the records seized by questionnaire and illustrate the situations reported by respondents. The results indicate that the inhabitants of this favela live under poor sanitation conditions and violated basic rights. The family income of the vast majority of the families is below the minimum wage, occupation and employment of the main responsible for the family income is mainly characterized by informal activities and unemployment.
Despite the difficulties experienced, respondents have, in general, a good perception of their health conditions. The experience of violence in the community is highlighted by more than half of the families, they hear shots every day, feel curtailed in their right to come and go, and have already experienced a wide range of violence situations. It is hoped that this study may promote the development of actions to improve the living conditions and health of socially excluded families as well as the encouragement of public health policies for people living in adverse contexts, marked by violation of fundamental rights of the human being.
