Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial effectiveness of
three solvent partitions of the crude extract of Pothomorphe umbellata:
hexane, butanol and and ethyl acetate fractions on the strains of
Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29210), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538),
Escherichia coli (ATCC 10536) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC
27853) often found in dental infections. The antimicrobial activity was
evaluated by testing for dissemination in agar. Bacteria were first incubated
separately for 24 hours at 37 °C, and then their concentrations were adjusted to the equivalence scale 1 of Mac
Farland. After dilution 1:10 the bacteria were grown
on Petri dishes. Discs of previously sterilized paper
towels were embedded in the different fractions and
distributed on the plates. The reading of halos of inhibition
was achieved after incubation for 24 hours
at 37 °C. The data in millimeters were not subject to
statistical parametric test. The results showed that
the hexane fraction only inhibited the growth of bacteria
P. aeruginosa and E. coli, the butanol fraction inhibited
the growth of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, and
ethyl acetate fraction inhibited all strains tested with
the exception of E. coli.
