Resumo
O objetivo é discutir as práticas científicas
no Estado do Amazonas no período
de formação e construção da disciplina
da medicina tropical na passagem do século
XIX para o XX. A categoria “doenças
tropicais” auxiliou na definição de
um objeto que era bastante incerto e amplo
nas terras de clima quente. A cidade
de Manaus se tornava em um lugar perigoso
para estrangeiros, migrantes e os
moradores dos subúrbios da cidade porque
as suas características geográficas e
suas condições ambientais possibilitavam
a perpetuação de doenças como a
malária e a febre amarela. Os médicos de
Manaus acompanhavam os debates sobre
as descobertas e sobre a profilaxia dessas
doenças e buscaram aplicar esses conhecimentos
na região.
Resumo em Inglês
This study aims at discussing the scientific
practices in the state of Amazonas
in the period of construction and development
of tropical medicine field of study
in the late nineteenth to the twentieth
century. The category “tropical diseases”
helped to define an object that was
quite broad and uncertain in the land of
hot weather. The city of Manaus became
a dangerous place for foreigners, migrants
and residents of neighborhoods of
the city because its geographical conditions
and environment enabled the perpetuation
of diseases such as malaria
and yellow fever. The physicians of Manaus
followed the discussions on the findings
and on the prevention of these diseases
and tried to apply this knowledge
in the region.
