Doenças negligenciadas são agravos que persistem no país e estão relacionadas as condições de pobreza, iniquidades em saúde e exclusão social. São necessárias ações intersetoriais para a prevenção e controle dessas doenças. Nesse sentido, o ambiente escolar pode ser um local privilegiado para ações educativas em saúde, sendo que o professor do ensino fundamental tem um papel importante na construção de saberes dos educandos, podendo contribuir na realização de atividades educativas em saúde sobre as doenças negligenciadas. Esse estudo tem por objetivo verificar os conhecimentos e práticas dos professores do ensino fundamental sobre as doenças negligenciadas em um município endêmico. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico descritivo de corte transversal realizado com 99 professores do ensino fundamental (ciclo 1) do município do Jaboatão dos Guararapes PE. A coleta de dados foi realizada com um questionário. Foi verificado que 83,8 por cento dos professores são do sexo feminino. A maioria 79,8 por cento tem algum conhecimento sobre as doenças negligenciadas, 74,7 por cento acreditam que há fatores socioeconômicos determinando a incidência dessas doenças e a maioria acredita que seus alunos estão expostos as mesmas. Mais de 90 por cento dos professores acreditam que a educação em saúde e o ambiente escolar podem contribuir para a prevenção das doenças negligenciadas. Além disso 46,7 por cento dos professores não realizam atividades educativas em saúde sobre essas doenças. A maioria dos professores acredita que há necessidade de ações educativas realizadas pela secretaria de saúde no ambiente escolar e sugere a realização de capacitação e formação sobre essas doenças para todos os docentes. Conclui-se que há necessidade de um maior investimento em educação e saúde sobre as doenças negligenciadas com foco nos professores do município para que estes possam contribuir de forma efetiva e segura na prevenção e controle destes agravos (AU)
