Objetivo: Portadores de HIV/AIDS constituem um grupo de alto risco para contrair infecções intestinais veiculadas por água e alimentos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a prevalência de parasitoses intestinais em amostra de pacientes ambulatoriais e investigar a disponibilidade domiciliar de água tratada. Métodos: Para tanto, utilizou-se como fonte de informações registros médicos de prontuários de portadores de HIV/AIDS relacionados com os exames parasitológicos de fezes realizados no período de Janeiro de 2000 a Dezembro de 2002, bem como informações sobre a disponibilidade domiciliar de água tratada. Resultados: Um total de 201 portadores de HIV/AIDS foi incluído no estudo. Dentre estes pacientes, 95 (47,3 por cento) encontravam-se infectados com no mínimo 1 parasita. A incidência foi de 22,4 por cento (45) para Ascaris lumbricoides, 17,9 por cento (36) para Endolimax nana, 17,9 por cento (36) para Entamoeba coli, 4,5 por cento (9) para Strongyloides stercoralis, 3,0 por cento (6) para Entamoeba hystolitica, 2,5 por cento (5) para Giardia lambia, 2,0 por cento (4) para Hymenolepis nana e 1,0 por cento (2) para Trichuris trichiura. 95,5 por cento dos pacientes informaram que seus domicílios estavam ligados à rede de abastecimento coletivo de água tratada. Tais resultados confirmam a alta prevalência de enteroparasitoses em portadores de HIV/AIDS. Este estudo alerta para a necessidade de se aumentar a disponibilidade de informações para portadores de HIV/AIDS, sobre higiene de alimentos e sobre as infecções adquiridas via água e alimentos. Conclusão: Conclui-se que as intervenções educacionais em segurança alimentar devem ser prioritárias no tratamento dietético de pacientes HIV positivos, visando proteger este grupo, reconhecidamente vulnerável, das parasitoses intestinais
