O uso de biomassa como combustível, carvão e queima de madeira, é a maior fonte de energia para cozimento, aquecimento e outras necessidades domésticas, sendo considerado também o maior causador da pobre qualidade do ar domiciliar nas áreas rurais de países em desenvolvimento. A queima de biomassa produz uma mistura de poluentes liberando uma quantidade de monóxidos de carbono, óxidos de nitrogênio, material particulado, hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos que são conhecidos ou suspeitos de serem agentes cancerígenos. Este trabalho buscou determinar a associação entre a exposição à fumaça de fogão a lenha e o desenvolvimento de câncer de boca e laringe. Os dados analisados foram coletados de um estudo multicêntrico realizado de 1999 a 2003. A população de estudo foi composta por participantes da investigação (casos e controles) recrutados em hospitais nas cidades do Rio de Janeiro, Goiânia e São Paulo. (...). Já as estimativas para o sexo feminino mostram situações mais alarmantes. Os resultados dos centros unidos mostram uma chance 4 vezes maior das mulheres terem câncer de laringe se fizerem uso de fogão a lenha do que aquelas que nunca usam. Já para o câncer de boca para todos os centros para as mulheres houve associação de 3,62 (IC 95% 1,06- 12,32) para o uso atual. As mulheres que haviam sido expostas por mais de 40 anos aos poluentes intradomiciliares possuíam uma chance de 3,10 e 1,18 de terem câncer de boca e laringe respectivamente em relação a aquelas que nunca haviam utilizado fogão a lenha. Conclui-se que o uso de fogão a lenha é um potencial fator de risco para os cânceres de boca e laringe, principalmente para as mulheres, que são a população que estão mais sob risco.
