The treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste landfill leachate is a major environmental problem, with impacts on the health of populations living in areas surrounding the landfill due to the pollutants characteristics of leachate. One solution adopted in many countries is the combined treatment of leachate and domestic sewage in sewage treatment plants(STP). The viability of this option depends on the ability of the treatment plant to absorb the loads, especially organic and nitrogen, resulting from the leachate. In this study, we aimedto evaluate the efficiency of the combined treatment of leachate and domestic sewage usingbiological indicators of acute and sub-chronic toxicity andnot physical and chemical parameters of pollution control. The combined treatment of Morro do Céu landfill leachate with domestic sewage was monitored in IcaraíSTP(Niterói -RJ) and in a treatment plant on a pilot scale. The acute toxicological tests conducted with Danio reriofish and Daphnia similismicrocrustaceans showed that, although leachate is much more toxic to these organisms than sewer, the mixture of leachate with sewage did not result in a more toxic inflow for treatment than raw sewage. After treatment, the outflow toxicity complied with the environmental laws.Biomarkers indicators of sub-lethal toxicity were measuredin tilapia fish. Metallothioneins did not indicate the presence of metals higher in fish exposed than in controls.Acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity was inhibited in only one of the exposed group, indicating the possible presence of organophosphate and/or carbamates pesticides in treated effluent. The PAH's used as biomarkers (Naphthalene, Pyrene, Benzo(a)pyrene and 1-Hydroxypyrene) indicated that exposed fisheshad a greater absorption of PAH's than controls fishes, indicating the likely presence of these compounds in at least one of the inflowsto the combined treatment. Frequencies of Micronuclei and other nuclear erythrocyte abnormalities also indicate greater genotoxic damage in cells of organismsexposed than in controls.
