| en_US |

Abstract | The occurrence of diseases arising from the presence of intestinal parasites is a specific organic response to several factors which may be related to the host, to the specificity of the parasite or to environmental conditions. The present study focuses on the occurrence of infections and parasitic diseases caused by helminths and intestinal protozoa that affect human beings, with the central objective of investigating the circulation of species of medical importance in the Military and their families residing in the Training Center of Ilha da Marambaia ( CADIM) - Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro. The results were obtained through an epidemiological questionnaire with questions about habits and symptoms and the analysis of fecal samples through optical microscopy under the techniques of spontaneous sedimentation and immunodiagnosis. The findings pointed to a prevalence of 56%, being in sequence from the most to least frequent: Giardia lamblia (36%), Entamoeba histolytica / dispar (20%) and Entamoeba Coli 8%, the latter being co-infected. Individuals with positive samples for intestinal parasites were referred to the CADIM Official physician for appropriate prophylaxis. All identified parasites were protozoa, All identified parasites were protozoa, which warns about the safety of the water consumed for drinking use in this location. It is possible to conclude through this study that structural and educational actions are necessary to guarantee the quality of water resources in the region, as well as promoting the reduction of the prevalence of pathogenic protozoa and other presumed waterborne diseases. | en_US |
