Abstract
The present work aims to analyze the relationship between three processes located in the 19th century: the privileges (kind of patents) attributed to sugar producers, the circulation of science and technology and the process of institutionalizing science in Brazil. The documentary corpus of the research consists of newspaper articles contained in the journal O Auxiliador da Industria Nacional. The newspaper belonged to the Sociedade Auxiliadora da Industria Nacional, an institution responsible for evaluating requests for privilege. Appropriating the global history, we seek to identify which references to scientific knowledge and international experiences on sugar in the discourse of the Portuguese-Brazilian illustrated elite, as well as to investigate the implications of references to these international experiences in the elaboration of their discourse. It was found, through the analysis of the documentation, that for the modernization of sugar production the solution found in the 19th century was the appropriation of scientific knowledge from the colonization of the French Empire, in order to adapt this knowledge to the “current state” of “industry”. In this sense, it is understood that this process was involved in political-social relations that associated technical-scientific modernization and social conservatism from a non-contradictory point of view, and that ended up conferring this profile, of the so-called “useful science”, to the scientific institutions in Brazil.
