Abstract
In this work, it was proposed to identify current trends in nursing practice based on the study of the transformations of this practice in conjunction with the organization of health care in the country. It was found, throughout the study, that nursing practice, as it follows the forms of organization of health care in the country, is concentrated in hospitals and, therefore, distanced from the population's health priorities. Around 70% of nursing practice is carried out by attendants, who constitute an undervalued workforce. An investigation carried out in a city in the interior of the State of São Paulo, in the form of a case study, aiming to collaborate in clarifying the current difficulties of nursing practice, showed that the nursing activities carried out in the different types of services providing healthcare assistance pregnant women are insufficient and inadequate, not corresponding to national and international recommendations. These activities are mostly carried out by female people, without professional qualifications, with a low level of remuneration and without adequate training to carry out the occupation. This investigation proves that, in view of the current projects for change in the organization of health care, there is a need to implement the current movement in order to redefine nursing practice, aiming at effective participation in solving the population's health problems.
