Abstract
The "social marginalization" suffered by a large part of the Brazilian population is an "incontestable fact, especially since the beginning of the Sixties" (Munhoz, D.G., 1987). This reality is clearly shown by the indicators: low income, levels of unemployment and unconqerable access to goods and basic services, i.e. the lack of the minimum necessary for a humanly dignified survival. Hypothesizing that the working class in one of the socially most vulnerable groups, it was the objective of this study to identify the conditions of food and nutrition and the knowledge of the relations with the general conditions of life and mainly, the working conditions, prevailing in a group of workers. Within the general working class, a group of workers in building construction has been studied. The research has been realized on (3) three construction sites in the City of Rio de Janeiro. Attempts were made to identify the relations between the levels of physical activity required by the type of work and the nutritional status of individuals occupying different functions (performing different occupations). Significant differences were detected among the groups of physical activity, mainly with regard to the level of education, type of habitation and water supply, type of social assistance appealed for, initial period of productive activity, some indicators of nutritional status, incidence of working accidents and anemia. Within the examined groups of physical activity, the one with the greater nutritional risk, as compared to other groups (with levels of light or moderate activity) was the group with intensive physical activity. As an inevitable consequence, this group of greater nutritional risk, i.e. where the difference between the real intake and the existing necessity is most significant, needs a more problem directed intervention in the public health sector.
