Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought challenges to the Brazilian population and its workforce. Federal public universities were extremely demanded and attacked during this period, and remained in operation thanks to their body of workers, including technicaladministrative servers, a group little investigated in academic research. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between health-disease and work of this group during remote work in the COVID-19 pandemic. The study used a mixed methodology, bringing together (i) quantitative methods (online questionnaire), with analysis using descriptive statistics and (2) qualitative methods (Workshops on Occupational Health), using French Discourse Analysis as a method of analysis. The quantitative step (264 participants) refers to cis women (61%), cis men (36%), non-binary (2%), and 1% who preferred not to identify themselves. As for race/ethnicity, 60% classified themselves as white, 48% as brown and black and 1% as yellow. For 50% of women and 45% of men, there was an increase in professional work; 84% and 37%, respectively, refer to an increase in domestic work. The qualitative step was based on the participation of five workers, with the identification of the following axes of analysis in the Workshops: work: conditions and organization of work; mental health: pleasure and suffering at work; defensive strategies: individual and collective; and university: what is the university? And what is the mission of the university? Workshop participants referred to work overload during remote work, lack of institutional support and lack of boundaries between home and work. To defend themselves against situations of suffering, team meetings were identified as a point of support in this scenario. As sources of pleasure in remote work, the fact of not having to commute to work and being close to family were mentioned. About the university, the participants mentioned its elitist character, emphasizing that some disciplines filter students, not guaranteeing the universalization of knowledge. The identification of positive and negative aspects of remote work, mainly in relation to work conditions and organization, brings subsidies to the discussion about actions to protect the mental health of workers in telework. Together, the empirical material contributes to the important agenda to be considered in the discussion on telework, which has been implemented in the Federal Institutions of Higher Education. The study also pointed out the need for future studies on gender and work relations, focusing on the intersectionality of gender and race.
