Abstract
This paper aims to discuss aspects of the black popular culture as health promoter with members of the Mariocas Company, a popular culture group with most members from Maranhão, and for this purpose, interviews were conducted with 11 of them. The current headquarter of the group is located in Little Africa, downtown of Rio de Janeiro. The scenario is a history of struggle, suffering, and also resistance from people who immigrated from Maranhão to Rio de Janeiro, leading with social challenges. The questions that guided this study were: 1- What are the main problems the group has faced? 2- What do the frequenters of those places think about health? 3- How do they relate it to their cultural practices? Based on the answers, categories of analysis have been created. The discussion of the results indicated that there are problems arising from the lack of public policies and funding to carry out the activities, otherwise there is a kind relationship between participants in sharing knowledge, enabling them in different crafts. Based on the concepts of social support (VALLA, 1999) and the Health Promotion conceptualization of the Ottawa Charter (1986), the research indicates that there is a positive relationship between culture and health since the Mariocas Company is a collective who socially supports each other, identify themself as a family and develops various aspects in their coexistence that characterize activity and health promotion relationships
