Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic in the state of Amazonas had its epicenter in the municipality of Manaus, with its expressive spread in other municipalities, referring to a process of internalization of the disease during the two epidemic peaks. The capital of Amazonas was the picture of the devastation of the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which achieved the highest rate of transmissibility by Sars-Cov-2 and the highest lethality rate in Brazil, thus contributing to the rapid increase in the incidence of the disease, leading to the collapse of the local health system and, consequently, increasing the number of deaths. Considering this scenario, the aim of this study was to analyze mortality from COVID-19 in the municipality of Manaus from March 2020 to June 2021. About the method, an exploratory and observational study was carried out, of quantitative approach of deaths occurred by COVID-19 in the municipality of Manaus, in the foretold period. The data used were obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM) of the Municipal Health Department of Manaus/Amazonas. Initially, data analysis occurred in an exploratory way, with simple table construction and bivariate analysis. The data used were obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM) of the Municipal Health Department of Manaus/Amazonas. Initially, data analysis occurred in an exploratory way, with the construction of single and double entry tables. To identify the main factors related to deaths due to COVID-19 in the elderly, the technique of non-conditional logistic regression was used, having as dependent variable the deaths that occurred in the elderly (vs. non-elderly). Among the main results, the analysis of deaths was observed that higher frequency of these by COVID-19 occurred in males (57.4%), over 60 years (64.3%) and brown (69.6%). The variables marital status and schooling were the most affected by death, the deaths analyzed, married people (40.5%) and high school education (28.7%) were the most affected by death and the health district that had the highest percentage of deaths due to COVID-19 was the South, among the deaths analyzed. In the context of the pandemic dissemination, it is suggested that the actions in the three governmental spheres were not congruent, timely and expedient for effectively confront COVID-19, as demonstrated in the results of this study.
