Abstract
When he came to Brazil for the first time, in 1865, Louis Agassiz (1807 – 1873) already enjoyed wide international recognition. Although the original purpose of his coming was to get away from work and focus on recovering his health, which he was beginning to show signs of frailty, a meeting with businessman and banker Nathaniel Thayer Jr. completely changed the objectives of the enterprise when it offered full funding to turn the trip into a true scientific expedition. In this article, we present the network of auxiliaries involved in the Thayer Expedition, led by Louis Agassiz, and observe how many members of the local populations contributed to the accomplishment and scientific results achieved by the expedition.
