Abstract
This communication has as its theme the study of controversies and the principle of symmetry in the field of new historiography of science. The analysis thread is the dialogue that Bruno Latour, in We were never Modern, establishes with the work of Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer, Leviathan and Air-Pump: Hobbes, Boyle and the experimental life. The dispute between Thomas Hobbes and Robert Boyle around the artifact built by the latter, whereby experimenters caused the vacuum and investigated the mechanical behavior of gases is a controversy considers exemplary in study of Shapin and Schaffer and chosen by Latour to discuss the constitution of modernity and what he calls separation between the natural world and the social world, the pair creation of nature and social context.
