concepção do corpo.
Abstract
This research studies the constitution of a psychiatric category, the Body Dismorphic Disorder. This
disorder is defined as an exaggerated preoccupation about an imaginary aesthetical flaw that causes a
significant suffering for the individual. A bibliographical revision shows how the conception of the disorder
has changed through the years. These changes are described as intimately linked with the changes of
diagnostic technologies and of the conception of the body. Thus, it is demonstrated that this disorder can be
understood as a socially constituted category that is spacially and temporally bound.
