Abstract
Analysing the official documents from the archives of Medical Academy, as
well as newspaper and journals distributed in Rio de Janeiro, the author was able to
approach the prophylactic speeches related to syphilis. Those speeches were to prevent
and minimise the effects of the disease, but they also included ideas of innovation of the
women’s position in the society and the reinforcement of their role in the traditional
structures of Rio de Janeiro´s society. Although the physicians of the Academy did not
produce those innovations and reinforcement of the women’s position in the society,
they were included as a consequence of a dialogue between those professionals and the
social reality they were dealing with. Those speeches are recovered from editors`
opinions, public opinions, and announcements in newspaper and journals, and from the
professional opinions in the Academy of Medicine publications. In the XIX century,
when physicians were specially committed to fight high mortality, the prophylaxis of
syphilis was specially interesting because of the important role attributed to the mother
in assuring family’s health and continuity.
