Abstract in Portuguese
Portanto, a
Abstract
The exposition to pesticides is very preoccupying, in particular in developing
countries. In Brazil, the use of pesticides increases rapidly, specially in the southeast
part of the country _ where the average use of the substance is 12 kg of pesticide pro
worker pro year. In the basin of the São Lourenço‘s stream, in Nova Friburgo, one of
the main oleicol regions of the State of Rio de Janeiro, it was indicated that the average
use was 56,5 kg of pesticides pro worker pro year. Due to the high use of agrotoxin in
this region, we have decided that the main purpose of this study was to evaluate the
possible alterations in the process of pregnancy of women who were exposed directly or
indirectly to many kinds of agrotoxins during the pregnancy. Therefore we analysed the
sex ratio of the newborns, the types of birth, the Apgar punctuation, the weight of the
newborns, pregnancy age and weight/pregnancy age of the newborns, who were born at
the São Lourenço Valley and at the neighboorhood of Conselheiro, in Nova Friburgo.
These informations were correlated with previous personal and pregnancy data of these
women. The study shows that the newborns whose mothers worked at the São Lourenço
farming were smaller and weighted less then the newborns whose mothers didn‘t work
at the field. In conclusion, the chronicle exposition to agrotoxins during many years,
especially during the pregnancy, can be a major influence in the weight and size of the
newborn when we analyse the mother’s professions.
