interdisciplinaridade e interculturalidade.
Abstract
The work identifies the pattern of fecundity of the indigenous women GuaraniMbyá, of Paraty municipality, in Rio de Janeiro, and analyzes the interrelations between the fecundity and the ways their culture view the world and live. The text develops a methodological triangulation, by using quantitative and qualitative methods, and goes back to the Jesuitical period (years 1641-1808), to disclose the behavior of fecundity in this
period. The net birth rate of 61 per cent and the fecundity global rate of 12 children, for the years 1997-1999, show a fecundity pattern that overcomes, more than three times, the one reported for the Brazilian population. We found also that the fecundity between 1641-1808 and between 1946-1999 did not change, the pattern remained similar, although there was
an elevated migration rate — 5 migrations for each person, on average. This means that the migration is not interfering in fecundity. The Guarani world comprises two dimensions: one terrestrial and the other supernatural. Both interlace and become a large and complex tissue where gods, bad spirits, nature spirits, dead people’s spirits and the Guarani
circulate. In this tissue appears the social and religious relevance represented by fecundity, to the Guarani and the way that the Guarani people, through fecundity, practice part of the social control of the group. With the collected data, we verify the importance of beginning
the reflections on reproductive health with the participation of men and women, as well as carrying out Indian health work, within an interdisciplinary and inter-cultural framework.
