específicas e políticas gerais aplicadas a tais sistemas. A Saúde Pública,
reais.
Abstract
Environmental problems are characterised by the group of facts that are
revealed in the environmental studies, including the diagnosis of the
environmental processes which there are developed, their consequences
beyond the geographical limits (influence area), and the considerations about
the specific actions and general politics applied to such systems. The Public
Health, when related to the environmental subject, shows itself under several
facets and points of view, in such a way that we must choose one or more
research directions. These directions must always have the aim of make clear
the inter-connections between the man, the nature, the social and economical
development and the health, in its multiple meanings.
The main objective of this study was to promote a systematic
accompaniment of the environmental contamination in the south region of the
Rio de Janeiro State (Costa Verde), which was impacted by industrial residues
contaminated with heavy metals, in consequence of decades of industrial
activities potentially pollutants by toxicant residues.
Two distinct areas were studied, being one of them known as
contaminated by heavy metals, and another area, considered as exempt of
pollution of human origin. With such intention, several analyses referring to
heavy metals presence in the marine biotic system were accomplished, as well
as in the human populations resident in the neighbourhood. These analyses
demonstrated that certain species of the biota, as well as certain organs of
these species, offer risks to the health of human populations that regularly
consume them; it was also demonstrated that some species show a great
potential as biological monitors for specific metals.
The obtained results demonstrated, also, that even non contaminated
areas may present heavy metals exposure sources, related to occupational
and/or recreational exposure. Therefore, the previous determination of exposed
groups in opposition to control groups must be rethought, as it generates an
evident bias when we face complex situations, simply because they are real.
