Abstract
Over the last ten years, cases of health problems as well as deaths involving patients who used compounded medicines have rekindled the debate about the quality and the role of this type of medicines in Brazil. The objective of the present study was to describe the profile of non-sterile allopathic medicines compounded by the four specially authorized pharmacies located in the city of Nova Friburgo/Rio de Janeiro, by means of a retrospective documental investigation of their principal characteristics. To this end, the records of November 2006 extracted from the General Registry Books of the four specially authorized pharmacies were evaluated, for a total of 12,417 registrations. The results showed that there is a low prevalence of officinal formulas (< 1,0%), there is a high prevalence of medicines compounded in the capsule form (83,6%), antidepressants (60,7%) and anorectics drugs (23,9%) are more prevalent among the active principles subjected to special control (Judicial Directive SVS/MS nº 344/98), and there is a high prevalence of medicines compounded at the same dose as the pharmaceutical specialties available on the Brazilian market (> 50,0%), a fact that does not qualify them as magistral formulas regarding personalized doses.
