O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar o efeito das quedas e suas conseqüências na qualidade de vida de mulheres idosas de uma comunidade de baixa renda do município do Rio de Janeiro, buscando entender os significados, dados por elas, a este evento. Foi realizado um estudo exploratório que usou abordagem quantitativa - que teve como instrumento um questionário que foi aplicado a 37 idosas - e qualitativa- com entrevista semi-estruturada feita a 11 mulheres idosas. Os resultados mostraram que entre as idosas que responderam ao questionário, 40,5 por cento caíram no último ano.A maioria das quedas aconteceu fora da residência da idosa (52,9 por cento). As consequências mais freqüentes foram o medo de cair (84,6 por cento), a modificação de hábitos (30,8 por cento) e a imobilização (23,1 por cento).As análises das entrevistas e dos dados quantitativos mostraram a influência das quedas na qualidade de vida das mulheres idosas estudadas. Em todos os domínios do WHOQOL-Bref houve redução nas médias do grupo que caiu no último ano em relação às que não caíram e, a diferença foi mais significativa no domínio psicológico.Enfim, as quedas são freqüentes entre os idosos e trazem conseqüências que alteram negativamente a qualidade de vida dessas pessoas. Sua ocorrência pode ser evitada com medidas preventivas adequadas, identificando causas e desenvolvendo métodos para reduzir sua ocorrência.
Abstract
The objective of this work is to analyze the effect of the falls and their
consequences in the quality of aged woman’s life in a low revenue’s community of Rio de Janeiro town, looking for the meanings, gave by themselves, to this occurrence. It was made an explorative research that has used the quantitative method – that has used as instrument a questionnaire applied to 37 aged women – and qualitative - with a halt-structured interview made with 11 aged women. The results has shown that among the elderly that answered the questionnaire, 40,5% fell in the last year. The majority of the falls has happened outside of the elderly’s
residence (52,9%). The most frequent consequences were the fear of falling
(84,6%), the change of habits (30,8%) and the immobilization (23,1%). The
analysis of the quantitative facts, have shown the influence of the falls in the quality of the studied aged woman’s life. In all of the WHOQOL – Bref domain there was a reduction in the averages of the groups that fell in the last year, comparing to the ones that didn’t fall and the difference was more significant in the psychological domain. At last, the falls are frequent among the elderly and they bring consequences that change the quality of these people’s life in a negative way. Their incident can be avoided with preventive and appropriate methods, identifying the causes and developing methods to reduce their incident.
