Abstract in Portuguese
-1
) e de efluente tratado (0,23 – 1,50 ng.
L
-1
-1
-1
quantificada no

Abstract
Several previous research studies have pointed to the occurrence of emerging
contaminants in aquatic matrices. These pollutants have not yet been regulated, but which
have the potential to affect human and environmental health. This group of contaminants
includes, 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic hormone present in contraceptive pills,
with high estrogenic potential and bioaccumulation. Among its effects as endocrine
disruptor, the most notorious is the feminization of male fish. The occurrence of emerging
pollutants in Paranoá Lake (Federal District – Brazil) is presumed due to the release of
effluents from treatment plants in this reservoir and the fact that these stations were not
designed for the removal of these types of contaminants. In this context, considering that
Paranoá Lake lake is nowadays a water supply reservoir, the objectives of this study were
to: quantify the concentrations of EE2 in this reservoir, evaluate the performance of sewage
and water treatment plants regarding the removal of EE2, and characterize the risk of
involuntary exposure environmental. The ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay)
method was used for the analysis. EE2 concentrations were quantified in all influent
samples (1.31 – 2.08 ng. L
-1
) and effluent (0.23 – 1.50 ng. L
-1
), and in one of the samples of
surface water from Paranoá Lake (0.07 ng. L
-1
). In the drinking water samples the
concentration was below the minimum limit of quantification of the method. The maximum
performance of removal of EE2 by the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was 88%, achieved
by the STP Riacho Fundo, which uses a system sequencing batch reactors that removes
phosphorus. However, in the Bardenpho process of sewage treatment followed by
coagulation/flocculation/flotation, the removal was around 30%. The concentration of 0.07
ng / L quantified in Paranoá Lake was below the observed mean of effects concentrations
described in the literature for aquatic animals representing the second and thirst trophic
level, but higher than the predicted concentrations without effect proposed by the European
Commission (0.035 ng. L
-1
). Thus, this research contributes to the expansion of the database
related to the presence of emerging contaminants in Paranoá Lake, in the domestic sewage
and wastewaters discharges stations. Besides to contributing to the monitoring of future
trends in the contribution of emerging contaminants to the Lake, to neutralize in advance
their negative impacts on water quality and ecosystem.
