Introdução: O conceito de Imagem Corporal (IC) é amplo, sua construção envolve processos fisiológicos, psicológicos e sociais. A IC é uma experiência subjetiva, que se refere às percepções, pensamentos e sentimentos sobre o corpo, envolvendo diversos aspectos cognitivos, afetivos, sociais e culturais. Objetivo: Analisar a associação entre a insatisfação com a IC e variáveis sociodemográficas, hábitos e comportamentos relacionados à saúde, segundo estratificação por sexo e por idade (adultos entre 35 e 59 anos e idosos entre 60 e 75 anos de idade). Métodos: Este estudo seccional foi realizado com a população de base do Estudo ELSA-Brasil, que avaliou 15.105 funcionários públicos de seis instituições, distribuídas pelas regiões Sul, Sudeste e Nordeste do Brasil. Para avaliação da variável dependente foi utilizada a escala de silhuetas de Kakeshita. Para análise estatística utilizou-se regressão multinomial com análise bruta e ajustada, com resultados expressos em razões de chance e intervalos de confiança de 95 por cento. Resultados: Foram observadas altas prevalências de insatisfação com a IC em todos os grupos. Entre os homens foi observada prevalência mais elevada de insatisfação com a IC por baixo peso, enquanto que entre as mulheres foi mais elevada a insatisfação com a IC por excesso de peso. Foram observadas associações significativas nos modelos ajustados, entre a IC e a escolaridade (entre os adultos), com o estado civil (entre as mulheres adultas e homens idosos), com a prática de atividade física (entre os adultos), com o consumo de frutas e verduras (mulheres adultas e idosas respectivamente), com o consumo de álcool (homens adultos e mulheres idosas) e com o hábito de fumar (em todos os grupos).
Conclusões: Os resultados apontam diferenças entre os grupos, ressaltando a pertinência de avaliarmos a IC por sexo e idade, e principalmente na avaliação dos idosos, que em geral não são avaliados. Os homens idosos apresentaram prevalência elevada de insatisfação com a sua IC por excesso de peso, apesar de mais baixa que a apresentada pelas mulheres idosas, e prevalência mais alta de insatisfação com a IC por baixo peso foi observada entre os idosos quando comparados as idosas.
Abstract
The concept of body image is broad and its construction involves physiological, psychological and social processes. The body image is a subjective experience, which refers to perceptions, thoughts and feelings about the body, involving processes cognitive, affective, social and cultural aspects. Objective: To analyze the association between dissatisfaction with the body image and sociodemographic variables, habits and behaviors related to health, according to stratification by sex and age (adults between 35 and 59 years and elderly between 60 and 75 years old). Methods: This cross sectional study conducted was with a population-based study of the ELSA-Brazil, which evaluated 15,105 civil servants from six institutions, distributed by the South, Southeast and Northeast regions of Brazil. The scale silhouettes of Kakeshita used was to assess the dependent variable. Statistical analysis used multinomial regression with crude and adjusted analysis, with results expressed as odds ratios and confidence intervals of 95 percent. Results: A high prevalence of dissatisfaction with body image observed were in all groups. Among men the highest prevalence of dissatisfaction with body image for low weight observed were, while among women was higher dissatisfaction with body image for overweight. Significant associations were observed in adjusted models between body image and schooling (among adults), with marital status (among adult women and elderly men), with physical activity (among adults), with consumption fruits and vegetables (adult and elderly women respectively), with alcohol consumption (adult men and older women) and smoking (in all groups).
Conclusions: The results show differences between groups, highlighting the relevance of evaluating the body image by sex and age, and especially in the assessment of the elderly, which generally are not assessed. Elderly men showed high prevalence of dissatisfaction with their body image for overweight, although lower than that shown by older women, and higher prevalence of dissatisfaction with body image for low weight observed were between the elderly compared older.
