Abstract
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the destitute child has become the object of attention of several knowledges, the subject of new legislations and institutions created specifically targeted for this audience, such as the Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos, opened in 1875. In the institution, created amid reformers projects and ideas of civilization and progress, orphans or boys whose parents and guardians did not have conditions to educate them received primary education and learned crafts, preparing a skilled workforce to subordinate positions based on manual labor. However, analysis of the sources demonstrated that the processes of admission and dismissal of the Asilo involved several actors with different interests, pointing to an active role of the family and members of the imperial elite in these procedures, that may have influenced the design of the Asylum throughout its existence. On the other hand, the nineteenth century is identified as the period of institutionalization of medicine in Brazil. Discussing with a perspective that emphasizes the power and performance of medical hygienists, new approaches have demonstrated the complexity of medicine in the
imperial period , and the various limits of the action of Hygiene at the time. In this sense, this study is an effort to discuss the dynamics of the institution , the social actors involved , and examine whether the principles espoused by hygienists were present inthe experience of the Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos during its existence at the time of the Empire, between 1875 and 1889.
