Abstract
This study aims to analyze the problems of feminine normality, in view of the movement of medical intervention in Rio de Janeiro city between the years 1925 and 1933. This research is based on the theoretical references of gender by Joan Scott (1994), on the conceptualizations of social representations and appropriations of Roger Chartier (2002) and on the issues raised by Georges Canguilhem (1990) concerning the notions of normal, abnormal and pathological. Therefore, the following journals were used as primary sources: Arquivos Brasileiros de Higiene Mental (1925-1947) and Boletim de Eugenia (1929-1933), besides books on healthcare professionals relevant to the topic in focus. We also analyzed two non-scientific magazines: Revista Feminina (1915-1936) and A Maçã (1923-1929). Our aim was to investigate to what extent the models of feminine normality proposed by Brazilians mental hygienists and eugenicists were suitable or not as gender patterns in non-scientific magazines of general circulation in Rio de Janeiro city.
