Abstract
Childhood obesity is growing around the world and requires more research and contributions so that there may be more effective prevention and interventions. Obesity is considered a disease by the World Health Organization (WHO) given the co-morbidities it bring, such as high blood
pressure, diabetes, impact on the joints, among others. The aim of this research was understanding obesity in childhood, considering its complexity, through the perception of the family to support more effective interventions. Firstly, we held an integrative review on the perception of parents about obesity on their children. The presence of distortion on the actual weight of the child by the parents and the ineffectiveness of intervention programs was found. Based on this early data we conducted a qualitative study with 10 families in a children's hospital, in Belo Horizonte. We performed interdisciplinary interventions in a group with obese children
and their families according to the complexity and the systemic theories. Participants in the study were interviewed before group activities were performed. The children were submitted to projective techniques with the following themes: “how I see myself”, “how others see me” and
“how I see food”. Fortnightly meetings were held which continued for six months. Two games for intervention with families were built based on that data: The game of the family – fun health (o Jogo da família- saúde divertida ) and Our stories (Histórias da gente). They were gathered into a booklet which also contains suggestions for workshops about childhood obesity to be carried out with the families. The Game of the family: fun-health was utilized in a Basic Health Unit through a workshop. Experience showed the applicability and the potential of the psychosocial intervention material as an instrument effective enough to further discussions and
increase the perception within the families regarding their eating and behavioral habits. We concluded that it proves unfeasible to comprehend and intervene in childhood obesity without considering the complexity, multi-causality and the family and social relations in play.
